About Umbrella Brewing

Umbrella Brewing was founded with the sole purpose of making great products inspired by British Classics – always made in London and always with the best ingredients we can find.

We make the things we want to drink. Founded in 2015, Umbrella Brewing is the brainchild of four friends inspired to create the products they want to drink. Based in a fire-damaged Victorian industrial building in North London, Umbrella Brewing is fully independent and self funded, utilizing the skillsets of the founders to manage every aspect of the brewery internally, from the restoration of the building that now houses the brewery to the creation of the liquid and all elements of design and label artwork.

Umbrella Brewing combines contemporary ideas with traditional techniques to create products that are steeped in history but never boring.

Alongside his partners at award winning bars The Sun Tavern and Discount Suit Company, Matt Armitage started Umbrella Brewing with a focus on crafting the perfect alcoholic ginger beer before honing his skills as a cider maker. The Umbrella Brewing portfolio currently includes a bottled Ginger Beer and Sparkling Cider with new products in development, all of which are made by hand on Holloway Road.

Hailing from the birthplace of ginger beer, Matt drew from his Yorkshire upbringing to create Umbrella Brewing’s first product. The result is a fiery alcoholic ginger beer with flavours of rich molasses supported by sharp citrus and a hint of malt. The natural ingredients (hand pressed ginger; fresh squeezed lemon, cane sugar, malted barley, yeast and water) create a unique ginger sediment in the bottom of the bottle, which is activated when turned.

Traditionally inspired, Umbrella Brewing Sparkling Cider is made exclusively with British apples purchased direct from British farmers. Chosen for their tannic astringency and orange notes, Dabinett apples compliment the citrus and tropical favours of Cox apples, resulting in a fresh, fruity cider that’s reminiscent of biting in to a Granny Smith.

With a keen eye on aesthetics, Umbrella Brewing products are designed with a meticulous attention to detail. The first bottlings feature artwork based on Decca Records vinyl sleeves and further collaborations have included Girl Skateboards, New York cocktail bar The Dead Rabbit and Dewar’s Scotch Whisky.

Umbrella Brewing was founded by the Umbrella Project creative trio (Alastair Tatton, Andy Kerr and Stephen Thompson) behind much-loved East End bars Discount Suit Company and The Sun Tavern, and cocktail-expert-turned-brewer Matthew Armitage.
